September 4, 2009

Two weeks ago in my commentary, I discussed the ongoing “peace process” concerning Israel and it’s Arab neighbors. — Last week I covered the “Never Again” attitude of the people of Israel and their rumored “Samson Option” — This week, I want to wrap up this “mini-series” of Israel with what I believe will be the sequence of events leading up to the final Battle of Armageddon and the ultimate victorious return of our Lord Jesus Christ.
As previously discussed, we do know that there will be more conflicts that will occur as we draw ever closer to the climax of this age. – For starters we see Hamas in control of Gaza on Israel’s southern border; Hezbollah all but running the affairs in Lebanon directly to the north; and of course, Iran on the verge of nuclear weapons. All of the aforementioned have stated their desire for the ultimate destruction of the State of Israel and with it, her people. – Oh, and let’s not forget Syria just east of the Golan Heights. She also hates Israel and wishes the same fate as her ill-informed allies. — And let’s also not forget the prophesied destruction of Syria’s capital city of Damascus as written in Isaiah 17:1. God doesn’t say as to exactly when this will take place, but rest assured, it will happen.
With all this in mind, a rather interesting prophetic twist surfaces while all this rhetoric of war and destruction rages on. — Israel will experience a period of peace! Ezekiel 38:8 states,
“You will come into the land of those brought back from the sword and gathered from many people on the mountains of Israel, which long had been desolate; they were brought out of the nations and now all of them swell safely.”
Verse 11 goes on to say,
“A land of un-walled villages; I will go to a peaceful people, who dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates.”
Verse 12 says,
“A people gathered from the nations.”
Verse 14 continues,
“On that day when my people Israel dwell safely.”
Has there ever been such a time in Israel’s history? No, there has not! – Is today such a time? – No! When then could there ever be such a time?
The only period in Israel’s life likely to meet this requirement comes right after the Rapture of the Church when the Anti-Christ and the European Union make a treaty with Israel to guarantee her peace and security. (This is the beginning of the 7-year Tribulation period.) It will be the first time since her becoming a nation in 1948 that she will be able to relax the vigilance she has been forced to maintain to secure her peace.
But then, when Israel finally turns her attention away from her defense and relaxes her guard, she will be woefully unprepared for the invasion of the armies of Russia and its prophesied coalition of nations. (This is known to prophecy watchers as the “Ezekiel War”.) Ezekiel does not give a specific date for this invasion, but he does give us ways to identify the time, or season it will occur. –
“After many days….In the latter years” (Ezekiel 38:8); “On that day when my people Israel dwell safely” (verse 14); “It will be in the latter days that I will bring you against my land” (verse 16).
So now what happens? – When the massive Russian-Islamic armies assemble on the northern mountains of Israel, it will appear to be the most grossly mismatched military event in history. – The Israelis will be so outnumbered that there will be NO human way they can win this war. — Only intervention by God Himself could possibly save them.
— And that is exactly what happens!!
As Ezekiel tells us in 38:18-19,
“And it will come to pass at the same time, when Gog comes against the land of Israel,” says the Lord GOD, “that My fury will show in My face. For in My jealousy and in the fire of My wrath I have spoken…”
How will God accomplish this miraculous feat? It’s too much to add for now, but you can read Ezekiel 38:19-22 for details. – Rest assured, in the final analysis, Gog and her armies are crushed and Israel is spared through the intervention of Almighty God.
In the 12th chapter of Revelation, the Apostle John revealed how this great war will come about. —
“So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth and his angels were cast out with him….now when the dragon saw that he had been cast to the earth, he persecuted the woman who gave birth to the male child” (verses 9,13).
These verses tell us that during the Tribulation, when Satan is cast out of Heaven to the earth, he will begin immediately to persecute the woman who brought forth the male child. The “woman” is an obvious metaphor for Israel, through whom the child Jesus was born. Satan’s first attempt at persecution will be the Battle of Gog and Magog (the Ezekiel War). As we previously learned, this battle, which precedes the Battle of Armageddon (Revelation 16), will be a massive, Russian-led coalition of nations coming against Israel. As Revelation tells us, Satan will be the motivating force behind this invasion. — But before he accomplishes his intended destruction of Israel, this tiny nation will be rescued by Almighty God.
This intervention by God will be a setback to Satan, but he won’t give up. He is relentless in his persecution of the Jews. His purpose, beginning in the middle of the Tribulation period is to destroy the Jewish people before Christ can set up His kingdom, thus destroying God’s prophesied rule over the Earth.
According to Revelation 16, Satan will employ two scary personalities to execute his plan — the Beast and the False Prophet. (See Revelation 13). Here John tells us that Satan will empower the Beast, who is the head of the revived Roman Empire, and the False Prophet, the head of the new world religious system. Thus Satan (the dragon), the Beast (the Anti-Christ), and the False Prophet become the unholy trinity committed to the destruction of Israel.
To wrap up, when the Church of Jesus Christ is taken safely to Heaven and the Tribulation begins, the unrestrained Satanic persecution of Israel will propel the entire world toward the Battle of Armageddon.
As terrible and terrifying as these coming events may seem, there is good news! – We may be disturbed by the signs we see of coming catastrophic events – we may feel uneasy due to continual reports of wars and senseless terrorism – we may shudder at reports of nature turning against us — but the bottom line is simply this — we who trust the Lord as our savior need not fear. He loves and protects His own, and whatever comes, if we seek Him and His will for our lives, we will be among those whom He saves from the wrath to come.
Until next time,
