This week, I think I’ll talk about the economy. — I know — those of you who are reading this are already wanting to stop because – “Here he goes again about the same stuff! Last week it was California…” But before you ‘turn it off’, let me tell you why I feel this is so important in the scheme of things as it relates  to end-time Bible prophecy.

As for our nation, I believe the economy will be the catalyst that will bring this once -great society to its knees.
And internationally, it will be no different. Let’s look quickly at Germany in the years just prior to World War II. In the early 1930’s, the country’s money became so worthless that a wheelbarrow full wouldn’t buy a loaf of bread. — Inflation was off the charts!
This same scenario is shaping up to take place right here in America today. – We are printing money at a frantic pace with nothing to back it up. This will eventually lead to hyper-inflation and a rapid devaluation of the once-mighty dollar. It too will become a near-worthless currency that will lack any buying power. The example of the wheelbarrow may repeat itself.
Then what happened in Germany? The people were so desperate to feed their families that they would do anything to follow anyone that could change their lives for the better. — So, a leader surfaced with the promises of better times and the people happily followed.  — His name was Adolph Hitler.
This same scenario will take place on a global level in the very near future. The world will once again be desperate for answers and along will come a charismatic leader that will chant the same tune that was sung some 80 years ago — and the people will gladly follow.
Does history repeat itself? — Let’s take a look. The financial crash of 1929 unfolded in much the same way as this current economic situation. Every time investors thought it was safe to get back into the market, they lost more money. – Every time consumers thought it was safe to start spending again, the job market would hit another low. – Businesses couldn’t hold out and went bankrupt by the thousands.
Eight decades later, the same questions are being asked: is the worst really over? – Or is it just a temporary lull in the coming storm?
History is repeating itself, but unfortunately, most people don’t know history.
Ask the average guy on the street today and he’ll tell you that he has heard the crisis is over. After all, just recently, the New York Times trumpeted, “Fed Chief Says Recession is Very Likely Over” (Sept. 15). — And Newsweek’s Daniel Gross confirmed; “I’m prepared to declare that the recession is really, most probably over.” — And on and on…
“The good times are back. Stocks will keep rising until 2010,” said money manager, John Dorfman. “On balance, …I think the evidence favors continued gains.”
Sadly, it is all too familiar.
In 1930, the experts were also proclaiming that the worst was over and good times were ahead. But actually, the worst was only beginning.
In briefly over viewing the Great Depression, the market experienced five “sucker” rallies before realization set in that it would take time to recover. That time turned out to be some ten years. — Interestingly, during these five false rallies, the professionals invariably would declare that the worst was over.
The great market crash of 1929 swallowed up 48% of the market value in just a few days. In March of this year, the Dow Jones average had crashed by 53% from its highs. – The Dow has since rallied by 50% — just as it did 79 years ago.  –Where to next?
Also as was witnessed in those times, many professionals today are crying the same chant as they did then. Many of today’s “experts” are claiming the worst is over. – As an example, Citigroup strategist Tobias Levkovich says, “There is little evidence to be cautious.” Continuing, Goldman-Sachs soothsayer Abby Joseph Cohen states, “We do think that a new bull market has begun.”
Oh really?
The stock market is not the only indicator that is in concert with 1930. – According to the most recent data presented by Voxeu.org, an economy policy research center, world industrial production is also in uneasy unison with the 1930’s fall. Both the U.S. and Canada have seen their industrial production fall parallel to the 1929 crisis, as have Germany and Great Britain. Italy, France and Japan are doing much worse.
In the area of trade, our world is also worse off than that of our predecessors. Trade levels have fallen off a cliff. There are, however, some major differences between now and the first Great Depression.
In 1930, America was a producer. During that year the U.S. produced 70%  of the world’s oil, 60% of the world’s wheat and cotton, 50% of copper, 40% of coal. Additionally, America held half of the world’s monetary gold reserves. – Today America is a net consumer, relying on other nations for energy supplies and strategic minerals such as oil and copper to meet demand.
America also used to be a creditor nation. But it has gone from being the world’s greatest lender nation to its greatest debtor. — A situation that is getting worse by the hour. – America is spending money like there is no tomorrow. – It has paid out more money combating the current recession than it has on any other event in history, including World War II.
All the money might buy a little time. – It might make the false recovery last a bit longer – but it doesn’t really change anything. — A problem caused by too much spending and debt cannot be fixed by more of the same.
Soooo, what can or should we do about it? — For Christians, it is an easy decision. — If we look to the second chapter of the Book of Acts, verses 42-47, we see an example of what people did for one another. They devoted themselves to one another and to the teachings of their leaders. They also sold possessions as needed to help support one another in times of need.
I encourage each of you to be involved in a Christian fellowship – one that is prepared to serve each other spiritually and physically in the coming days of difficulty.
And remember, we Christians need have no fear because, “When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.” (Luke 21:28)

With all that’s going on around us today in regards to the news, the economy seems to be in the forefront. — Especially here in America. – Unemployment is at its highest since the Great Depression, the national debt has quadrupled in just eight short months to $1.4 trillion, home foreclosures are at an all-time high, the failure of up to 1,000 banks is predicted, the dollar is declining in value and is under constant international attack, and on and on…
To dig a bit deeper, let’s look at the state of California. Many don’t realize that she has the eighth largest economy in the world. In fact, if it was its own country, it would be a member of the G-8, a committee of nations with the world’s largest economies.
But now it is being said that California may become America’s first failed state. This is incredible considering that just a very short time ago, she was held up as the epitome of the vast opportunities America had to offer. – For all intents and purposes, the state has collapsed.
From its politics to its economy to its environment and way of life, California is like a patient on life support.
At the start of summer the state government was so deeply in debt that it began to issue IOU’s instead of wages. Its unemployment rate has soared to more than 12%, the highest in 70 years (The Great Depression).
Desperate to pay off a crippling budget deficit, California is slashing spending in education and healthcare, laying off vast numbers of workers and forcing others to take unpaid leave.  – In a state made up of sprawling suburbs the collapse of the housing bubble has impoverished millions and kicked tens of thousands of families out of their homes.
The crisis is so deep that Professor Kenneth Starr, who has written an acclaimed history of the state, recently declared, “California is on the verge of becoming the first failed state in America.”
So what has gone so catastrophically wrong? — Certainly the secularists will reel off many reasons such as inept leadership, disastrous fiscal management, and environmental decisions that have crippled industry.
While these are all good arguments, I want to submit a more specific reason – and that is its spiritual decline.
As for the nation, California, along with Massachusetts, has led the way in moral decay. To back this up, let me share just a few of the news headlines coming out of California in just the past couple of years:

California City Votes to Say Prayers Before Council Meetings – Faces Lawsuits
To continue, I would like to share just one more example of this public debauchery taking place:
Last September nearly 400,000 people assembled in San Francisco to celebrate the Folsom Street Fair. This is an annual hedonistic orgy to promote “leather pride”, which is a euphemism for sadomasochism, often referred to as “S & M”. This is a type of sexual perversion whose practitioners enjoy bondage, whipping, spanking and torture as forms of sexual expression.
The promotional poster for the event, sponsored by Miller Brewing Co., featured a blasphemous mockery of Da Vinci’s painting of the Last Supper. As the poster displayed, Jesus and His disciples were portrayed as half-naked homosexual sadomasochists. The bread and wine representing Jesus’ broken body and life-giving blood were replaced with sadomasochistic sex toys.
The city of San Francisco sanctioned the event and closed down several city blocks to accommodate it. They also provided police security. But the police were under orders to back-off from enforcing any of the city’s decency laws. The participants were therefore allowed to march down the streets scantily clad or fully nude. Many engaged in public sexual acts, including group orgies and masturbation.
Incredibly, no national media covered the event! They obviously felt it would be so repulsive to the general public that it would hurt the efforts to gain acceptance for homosexuals. Even more incredible was the fact that none of California’s political leaders were willing to condemn the activities.
Romans 1:24-27 says that one of the key manifestations of a society crying out for the wrath of God is “degrading passions” which produce a plague of homosexuality.
For Christians, with these facts laid before us, it is difficult to refute the argument that the loss of spiritual direction is the root cause for these debilitating societal problems. – Unfortunately, for the secular mind this position will make no sense at all. In fact, those of us who support this position will be considered religious “nut-jobs”.
What does God say about these worldly conditions? 2 Timothy 3:1-4 says,
But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God…
Sadly, we see these conditions existing in our world today — and it is not exclusive to just California. – I personally believe that what we are seeing in the “Golden State” is just a mirror of what will take place in our nation, and the entire world in just a very short time.
God is love and He is patient, but how long will He put up with this blatant disrespect for His written word? – Because of what we are witnessing all around us, I believe His patience has just about run its course.
I know that the stock market just hit 10,000 this week, and the word out of Washington is positive, but I somehow do not share their optimism. — Why? — Trust me! I don’t enjoy being a constant doomsayer, but until we turn our faces toward Almighty God, all this will come tumbling down.
Remember, my opinion is not based upon what I think because that doesn’t really matter — it is based upon what scripture tells us will be the outcome of a sinful lifestyle, both collectively and individually. Romans 6:23 states, “For the wages of sin is death.”
So what about hope through all of this? There is and that is the power of knowing Jesus Christ. When we see these things taking place and know through the Word that it is going to get worse before it gets better, the most powerful testimony is that we Christians are wholly at peace.
While everyone around us is in a state of panic – fainting from fear – those of us who believe will only grow stronger as we see our Lord’s words coming true.
The Bible speaks of that which can’t be shaken — and that is the praying Christians who will receive more and more encouragement from the Holy Spirit as we face these trying times.
“Look up, for your redemption draweth near.”
