It was in late 1965-66 that many of us young musicians were migrating to Hollywood in search of ‘that break.’ .. In fact, several of us lived in an apartment complex in North Hollywood. .. Besides myself & several members of our group, the list included Gregg & Duane Allman, several members of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, with occasional appearances from Jackson Brown, Stephen Stills, Steve Martin, & many others …

Greg & his brother called themselves “The Hour Glass” in those days. .. They, along with The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Steve Martin, and our group, “The Sunshine Company” signed with William McKewen Productions. .. Soon after, the Allmans, along with our group, signed recording contracts with Liberty/Imperial Records. .. The Allmans completed two albums as the Hour Glass during that time but eventually ended that venture & headed back to the southland to soon reform & ultimately become “The Allman Brothers Band.” .. Of course, the rest is history. .. This occurred sometime in 1968. …

Over the next several years, our paths crossed during concert tours. .. Of course, as some of you know, his brother Duane was killed in 1971 in a motorcycle accident. .. To me, it was a huge loss for the guitarists of the world as he was simply ‘one of the all-time greats.’ .. Having the opportunity to hear him & his brother ‘live’ as well as a few rare opportunities to ‘jam together’ at a couple of clubs along the way was a privilege. ..

As for Gregg, I can’t honestly say that we were buddy-buddy, but we did have several opportunities to ‘hang’ together, either on tour or during the ‘early, starving, waiting for the break’ days. .. I remember him as being a straight-up, honest & sincere guy. .. Needless to say, he definitely was blessed with a gift for not only singing & writing songs, but also was a good keyboard player. .. Like so few, he was given the opportunity to share his talents with the world. …

I don’t have any idea as to how his later life was lived as I fled the industry in 1973. .. My hope & prayer is that he found the peace that I have found, that being the saving grace of Jesus Christ .. ’cause if he did, I can’t wait to make some heavenly music with him! .. Hallelujah! ..

Finally, I pray for peace for those he has left behind & that I will hear his gift once again in the promised land. …

Until next time,
